Five county Red River Gorge area to benefit from wayfinding messaging

A multi-county tourism initiative is working to establish consistent and cohesive wayfinding signs in the Red River Gorge region. Two-phased grant money totaling $450,000 comes from the State Tourism, Arts, and Heritage Cabinet. John Nicholson is the consultant for the project.
“Come up with this wayfinding system that is unique and aesthetically pleasing and will be pervasive in the region in the years ahead,” said Nicholson.
Nicholson said the signage is under design currently. He envisions about 24 of these signs being established on various roads by the end of the year. Nicholson said the messaging will focus on historical and cultural sites in the five-county region.
The former director of the Kentucky Horse Park and now Old Friends thoroughbred retirement facility president said one of the long-term gains will be tourism collaboration.
“It is a unique and special region of Kentucky and it is multi-county, but it is a special asset to each of the counties,” said Nicholson.
Nicholson noted the state grant money paves the way for the wayfinding messaging. He added this process will result in a roadmap for additional signage down the road. Nicholson said the Gorge is an international attraction with its geological uniqueness.
He said the wayfinding will point to attractions in each county.
